October 7 and 8
Since our arrival, today was the first day that we were not required to attend lectures or tour with the group.  We were told "You're on your own!"  This was no small feat to many of us for whom the Japanese language system had not yet divulged its secrets of form and structure.  But on our own we were, and we ventured out to see Tokyo sans guide...

On this day also, I marveled at one of my favorite sites of Japan.  We were special guests of a Kabuki Theater group, and were witness to the behind the scenes dressing routine of a typical performer.  Afterwards, the performers staged a short Kabuki piece for us.
